Pronouncing Japanese

Here’s a brief introduction to Japanese pronunciation, from Matt Fargo’s Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang From “What’s Up?” to “F*%# Off!”:

Each vowel has only one pronunciation:

  • a = short ‘a’ as in ‘vagina’
  • i = ‘ee’ as in ‘amigo’
  • u = ‘oo’ as in ‘lunatic’
  • e = short ‘e’ as in ‘ex-girlfriend’
  • o = regular ‘o’ as in ‘Oh baby, oh baby, oh baby!’

 Just pronounced this out load and it brought a smile straight to my face :) It’s Leon Lai - Sugar in the marmalade!! The cheesiest pop song to come out of Hong Kong in the 90’s.
